Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter. His 1893 work The Scream has become one of Western art's most acclaimed images. In Paris, he learned much from Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, especially their use of color. In Berlin, he met the Swedish dramatist August Strindberg, whom he painted, as he embarked on a major series of paintings he would later call The Frieze of Life, depicting a series of deeply-felt themes such as love, anxiety, jealousy and betrayal, steeped in atmosphere. The Scream was conceived in Kristiania. According to Munch, he was out walking at sunset, when he 'heard the enormous, infinite scream of nature'.

George Washington died peacefully at home on December 14, 1799, aged 67 years old. A soldier, farmer, and statesman, as well as the first President of the United States under the U.S. Constitution, Washington was commonly referred to as the "Father of His Country" by his compatriots. He, like anyone else at the time, didn't know that dinosaurs existed because they were not scientifically recognized as such until 1824, when British naturalist William Buckland first described Megalosaurus, now regarded to be the first dinosaur to be scientifically named.

St. Joan of Arc, also called the Maid of Orléans, French Sainte Jeanne d’Arc or La Pucelle d’Orléans (born c. 1412, Domrémy, Bar, France—died May 30, 1431, Rouen) was a national heroine of France, a peasant girl who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army in a momentous victory at Orléans that repulsed an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred Years’ War. Captured a year afterward, Joan was burned to death by the English and their French collaborators as a heretic. She became the greatest national heroine of her compatriots, and her achievement was a decisive factor in the later awakening of French national consciousness.

Louisiana was named after Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 to 1715. When René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle claimed the territory drained by the Mississippi River for France, he named it La Louisiane. The suffix –ana (or –ane) is a Latin suffix that can refer to "information relating to a particular individual, subject, or place." Thus, roughly, Louis + ana carries the idea of "related to Louis." Once part of the French colonial empire, the Louisiana Territory stretched from present-day Mobile Bay to just north of the present-day Canada–United States border, including a small part of what are now the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Mark Antony was a relative and supporter of Julius Caesar and served as one of his generals during the conquest of Gaul and the Civil War. After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, he joined forces with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Octavian forming a dictatorial triumvirate. A civil war between Antony and Octavian was averted by Antony marrying Octavian's sister. But despite this marriage, Antony carried on a love affair with Cleopatra, who bore him three children, further straining Antony's relations with Octavian. Eventually, the ongoing hostility erupted into civil war in 31 BC. When Antony was defeated by Octavian's forces, both Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt where they committed suicide.

Spartacus was born in Thrace, an area where the modern-day Balkans states are located. He was sold into slavery and sent to the gladiatorial training school in Capua in 73 B.C.E. Soon after, he escaped with about 70 other gladiators and gathered his followers on nearby Mount Vesuvius. Gradually, more escaped slaves joined their ranks. It is estimated that there were 90,000 to 100,000 men in all. Together they used guerrilla tactics to fight off Roman attacks. In 71 B.C.E., General Marcus Licinius Crassus defeated the rebel army at Lucania, about 35 miles southeast of Naples. Spartacus was believed to have died in this battle. Around 6,000 men survived the battle but were later captured and crucified by the Roman army.

The book profiles his early life, coming of age, education, and 27 years spent in prison. Under the apartheid government, Mandela was regarded as a terrorist and jailed on the infamous Robben Island for his role as a leader of the then-outlawed African National Congress (ANC) and its armed wing the Umkhonto We Sizwe. He later achieved international recognition for his leadership as president in rebuilding the country's once segregationist society. The last chapters of the book describe his political ascension and his belief that the struggle continued against apartheid in South Africa.

According to Carole Levin, director of the medieval studies program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and author of The Reign of Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth I’s 16th-century reign was known for elaborate royal dinners that included marzipan shaped like fruit, castles and birds. But the Queen’s retinue also included a royal gingerbread maker. “She did do a banquet where she had gingerbread men made to represent foreign dignitaries and people in her court,” says Levin. The Queen wasn’t the only person eating gingerbread men. Also during this time period, gingerbread men were dished out by folk-medicine practitioners, often described as witches or magicians, who would create them as love tokens for young women.

In 1698, Tsar Peter I—known as Peter the Great—established a beard tax. He wasn’t the only ruler in history to do this—England’s Henry VII did the same—but what’s interesting is the story behind Peter's reason for the tax. Intending to learn from European nations’ successes, Peter I spent time during 1697 and 1698 traveling around Europe, in disguise, on a “Grand Embassy.” When he came back from the Grand Embassy, Peter I embarked on an ambitious project of modernizing Russia so that it could compete with the European superpowers. Among his reforms, he revised Russia’s calendar, introduced changes to the way Russian was written, completely changed the military, and tried to get Russians to go beardless, like the "modern" Western Europeans he had met on his tour.
