In American English, a lemon is a vehicle that turns out to have several manufacturing issues affecting its safety, value or utility. Any vehicle with such severe issues may be termed a lemon, and by extension, so may any product with flaws too great or severe to serve its purpose. The concept of describing a highly flawed item as a "lemon" predates its use in describing cars and can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century as a British and American slang term. The British use is derived from the US use and is less precise or specific: to be "sold a lemon" is little different from "sold a pup".

The Volkswagen Beetle—officially the Volkswagen Type 1, informally in German der Käfer (meaning "beetle"), in parts of the English-speaking world the Bug, and known by many other nicknames in other languages—is a two-door, rear-engine economy car, intended for five occupants (later, Beetles were restricted to four people in some countries), that was manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. Although designed in the 1930s, due to World War II, civilian Beetles only began to be produced in significant numbers by the end of the 1940s. The car was then internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed simply as the Volkswagen.

The Peugeot Lion emblem is one of the most iconic symbols of the French automotive industry. It represents the pride, strength, and quality of the cars produced by the Peugeot brand. At the end of the 1940s, Emile Peugeot wanted to identify the Peugeot brand by creating a logotype. Therefore, he asked a goldsmith from Montbéliard, Justin Blazer, to create an emblem. The goldsmith was inspired by the qualities of Peugeot's flagship product of the time: the saw. Speed, flexibility, and bite: the lion would be the figure of the brand.
